One of the questions you need to ask yourself before you start marketing is; where is your audience? Where are the people who are going to buy or sign-up to your wonderful products or services? You need to figure out just what platforms your target audience is lurking on. It is really important to do some research and not make too many assumptions. Admittedly, you’ll have some ideas based on your artistic/creative industry knowledge as well as seeing where your competitors are selling their wares. But, getting some solid research is critically important. Some solid googling will hopefully aid you in answering this question.
For example, this piece of research from Statista shows how Instagram has become the dominant platform when it comes to people looking for art. If you’re selling art, jewellery etc then obviously Instagram has to be a serious consideration as a platform for you to sell on.

Obviously there are a lot of caveats around this based on what you might be trying to sell. If you’re selling art to be hung in corporate reception areas then LinkedIn is going to be an important platform for you also. That’s where your industry knowledge comes in. Also, conducting a competitor analysis will also yield some clues as to where you might consider selling your wares. (We’ll look at competitor analysis soon).
The bottom line will always be that there needs to be some research to justify your choices of platform. Of course, we need to know a little bit about our customers also, so we’ll be looking at Buyer Personas soon.

Next time, completing an effective competitor analysis.
