If there is one I consistantly hear from authors it is that they really struggle to get sales. There is a very good reason they struggle: there are too many books.
The stats around this are staggering when you actually stop and think about it. In 2005, there were 282,000 books published in the US. Since 2020, there have been roughly a half million and a million books produced annually by traditional publishers, as well as more than two-million self-published titles. So if you’re wondering why your sales aren’t great, the numbers are stacked against you. Before I get to the solution, let me clarify a few things. Amazon’s KDP is a great service and in some regards is a victim of it’s own success. It is a great democratising tool enabling authors to avoid the trap of old fashioned vanity publishing. Traditional publishing houses are a lot of hard work for newbie authors, so a route to market such as KDP is such a powerful tool. You need a marketing strategy to drive traffic right to the page on Amazon where your target audience can buy your book. Let’s face it, they are highly unlikely to discover your book purely by chance, the odds are not in your favour. Find out where you audience is and start marketing your book there. TikTok has proven very beneficial for authors so see if your audience is there. Whilst you’re groaning at the thought of making videos, creating content and wondering why a few hours every day you have to become a marketer, remember the sheer number of books that are available.
